The 2026 Beaker Street Science Photography Prize has unveiled its 26 finalists, a stunning collection of images that showcase the beauty and scientific value of our world. This year's competition marks the 10th anniversary of the Australian Beaker Street Festival, which celebrates the intersection of science and art through photography. The prize highlights rare and unusual scientific phenomena, endangered species, and conservation efforts, offering a unique glimpse into the wonders of nature and science.
One standout image is Armando Ochoa Aguilar's 'First Day', which captures the birth of one-day-old red handfish hatchlings as part of a conservation program at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). With fewer than 250 red handfish left in the wild, this photo highlights the urgency of marine conservation efforts. David Sinclair's 'Creche' showcases another endangered species, emperor penguins, photographed during the first known human visit to the Lazarev colony in November 2024. The image underscores the impact of climate change on these iconic birds.
Brett Guy's 'The Holy Grail' is a breathtaking panorama, capturing bioluminescent algae, the aurora Australis, and the Milky Way in a single frame off the coast of Tasmania. This image exemplifies the festival's theme of exploring the wonders of nature and science. The finalists also include photos of parasitic wasps, satellites polluting the night sky, ancient 'ghost sharks', and evidence of platypus adaptation to varying temperatures.
The judges will select the top photo, and the public will also have a say by voting for their favorite. The 12 shortlisted images will be exhibited at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery during the Beaker Street Festival from August 6-17. This year's prize is a testament to the power of photography in communicating complex scientific ideas and sparking curiosity and wonder in viewers.
